Lewis Vernie Mitchell, 91, of South Haven, Michigan, passed away April 5, 2018, at Countryside Nursing and Rehabilitation. Lewis Mitchell was born November 1, 1926, the son of Lewis Lionel and Edith Wheeler Mitchell. After serving in the army at the end of World War II and as part of the occupation forces in Japan, he married his high school sweetheart, Ila Mae Fleming on August 1, 1947. He was a lifelong printer and newspaperman, working in Douglas and South Haven, Michigan; Portland, Indiana; Tuscaloosa and Fayette, Alabama; and Watseka, Illinois. He also was owner of the Milford Herald News in Milford, Illinois, for a number of years before returning to South Haven. He was a member of Casco United Methodist Church, the Gideons, the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He and Ila served on many Emmaus Walk weekends and Lay Witness Weekends.
Lewis was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Ila Mae Fleming Mitchell; his parents; grandson, Anthony Mitchell; brothers Terry and Ronald Mitchell, sister, Laura Willett; sisters-in-law Claire Mitchell and Florence Fleming; and brothers-in-law Dick Pumphrey, Chuck Willett, and Sam de Muro.
Lewis is survived by his children Michele Lynn (Barney) Cargile of Northport, Alabama; Robert Lewis (Beverly) Mitchell of Provo, Utah; and William Clinton (Kimberly) Mitchell of Havana, Illinois; and 14 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Georgia Nagel of New Buffalo; sisters-in-law, Joyce Mitchell of Florida, and Kathy de Muro of Arizona; brothers-in-law Lynn (Marian) Fleming of South Haven, Marvin Fleming of Ohio, and Bob (Lucille) Fleming of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at the Casco United Methodist Church with Pastor Don Graham and Pastor George Fleming officiating. Funeral services will follow visitation at 2:00 PM.
