Anna Ruth Smith, 87, of Zeeland, MI, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Providence Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Zeeland, MI. She was born Nov. 11, 1929 in Lacota, MI, to David H. Britt and Anna Laura Orpha Hoag.
Anna was a dedicated career woman at a time when women traditionally stayed at home. She worked for the Bell Telephone Co. and GTE for a total of more than 50 years. She was the last remaining telephone operator in the state of Michigan when phone companies eliminated the position.
She enjoyed painting landscapes, visiting with friends and going to the racetrack with girlfriends, reading the Bible and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She married Norman J. Sisson on Dec. 23, 1948 in Kalamazoo, MI. She married Ernie Smith on Sept. 11, 2002 at the Calvary Baptist Church in South Haven, MI.
She’s survived by three children: Norman W. (Joan) Sisson of Portland, OR, Stephen R. (Cathy) Sisson of Pullman, and Frank O. (Sarah) Sisson of South Haven; four grandchildren: Sabrina Sisson of Grand Rapids, Amanda Sisson of Pullman, Barbara Sisson of Dover, TN and Holly Sisson of Hancock, MI; three great-grandchildren: Stephen M. Sisson of Pullman, and Emma M. Fielding and Robert J. Sears, both of Dover, TN; 7 stepchildren, 24 step-grandchildren, 40 step-great-grandchildren and 1 step-great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, David H. Britt, Jr.; first husband, Norman J. Sisson; two infant sons; and her second husband, Ernie Smith.
A remembrance ceremony will be held at a later date.
